Carefully restored over 18 months, "The Cottage" is reminiscent of turn of the century agricultural structures originally found throughout the South. Located in Mineola Texas, the cottage is very comfortable and unique containing period correct artifacts, furniture and art. From the massive oak framing, to the tongue and groove walls, beadboard ceilings and variety of pine hardwood flooring, this structure was built to stand the test of time. The builder and former owner was one of the first individuals to ever sketch and document the plant and animal life as well as the topographical features in this part of East Texas and at a time when the area was growing and changing rapidly. A naturalist and rancher, this 58 acre retreat was his "Walden". Homestead Cottage housed his woodworking shop and the upstairs loft was his study where he filed his naturalist diaries and records going back to the 30's. He also was the original recycler and would store items collected from decades of salvaging and recylcling in the many outbuildings of the Homestead. The renovation, which was started in early 2009, attempted to use as many of these materials as possible to retain the character of the structure and continue to reflect the spirit of the original builder. You will love our country Kitchen! Modern amenities have been added to the house to provide guests with a comfortable stay, including a full kitchen, modern bathroom and central heat and air, but the house retains its early agricultural and naturalist roots. A new lake was constructed which added a large water feature that wraps around the Cottage. Click here for blog articles and links on the property and former owner. Ponds and Lakes at East Texas Homestead Farms
Our West pasture pond is open for fishing on a catch and release basis.
East Texas Homestead Farms has 3 ponds on it. The first one is in the West pasture and is roughly 1/3 acre. Guests are welcome to try their luck on a catch and release basis. This pond is stocked with large Bluegill, so we recommend using worms with a bobber or small spinners. We had one surprised guest catch a 6-pound bass in this pond, so you never know! It has been stocked with large common and Coppernose Bluegill and redear sunfish and a few catfish to keep the bluegill in check.
The second pond is the one to the left of the driveway bridge as you arrive at the cottage. This pond was recently rennovated and at 10 feet deep is much deeper than it looks. This pond is about to be stocked with Tilapia for weed control and we will add catfish.
The 3rd lake (pictures below) is the newest and largest and is the next one downstream from the second pond. This pond follows a deep ravine and wraps around the cottage. Record rainfall has the pond full. We aspired for this pond to be a trophy Bluegill and Redear sunfish lake, but it has catfish, crappie and bass as well.
